Leoš Janáček

IN THE MISTS

02

Written at a very traumatic period in the life of the composer Leoš Janáček, shortly after his daughter’s suicide, ‘In the Mists’ is a piece full of emotion.  The underlying theme is one of loss and of being lost, of seeking to find one’s way when life seems to lack purpose and in an emotional state regularly buffeted by a wide range of emotions, from anger to the ecstasy of memories which then act to accentuate the feelings of loss.  The final movement creates some resolution, a looking to the future with grim determination and some stoicism but not without the continuing echoes of loss.

The images created to accompany this work are designed to reflect a similar range of emotions, each having an underlying theme but with areas of detail that can be explored creating a range of emotional responses in the viewer, responses that resonate in response to the triggers in the music.
